Charater meme: Bertie Legacy.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Bertie is 5’11” and well built. He’s very athletic and his build reflects this.

2. How old is he?
We’ll see him from birth to death. At the moment in the story he’s 21 and in game he’s 22.  Some of these answers reference him when he's older, but I'm trying to steer clear of spoilers.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
At the moment, he slouches quite a bit, apart from when he’s on the football pitch. He doesn’t realise he’s doing it, and he slouches more when he’s around his brother.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He is a very well person. He’s rarely had a day’s illness in his life. He’s very, very fit. He hasn’t found a sport he can’t pick up, but he’s best at football which he loves.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
He’s rather graceful, and it’s a grace that comes from being in complete control of his muscles.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
At first glance, his nose appears to be too small, and his lips too full to be conventionally attractive on a man, but there’s something about how they work together. He’s gorgeous.

He doesn’t really think about how he looks other than he looks like his father and brother. If he did think about it, then at the moment, he’d think that Stuart somehow is more attractive than him, even though they look so alike.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Fairly light and clear. He has a small scar on his forehead where he fell over as a child, but that’s it. He also has a scar on his upper arm, near the shoulder.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
He has dark brown hair that is naturally wavy. Those waves mean it can get quite tousled and messy. His wife rather loves this, even if she does roll her eyes about it when they are meant to be going out and looking smart.

9. What color are his eyes?
A clear, bright green, just like his father and brother’s.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Not that I can think of.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
His left shoulder.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
He favours earth colours, and his favourite everyday suit is of a russet twill.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
His clothes are tailored for him, and given his good, athletic figure, they not only fit him well, but look very, very good on him. He is very comfortable in his own skin, believe it or not (his insecurities aren’t really to do with his body image, apart from when he compares himself to his brother), and so is comfortable in whatever he wears, or doesn’t wear.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Yes and no. In game, I’m going to be putting him into the athletic career, so no, he’ll dress differently. In the story, he’ll be taking over the shops, so in that case, yes he will wear the same clothes.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Drawers, cut to just above the knee. Wool in winter and silk or cotton in the summer.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
He has an even pitched voice, that perhaps edges towards being deep.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He speaks at a medium volume, but can get loud, especially when he’s yelling instructions to his team mates on the football pitch.

When he was young, he hesitated a lot.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He has a Victorian home counties English accent. Not as posh as Sarah Jane, but he articulates his words properly and speaks steadily.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
His native tongue is Simlish, which is basically English, and knows a few phrases of SimFrench. He can also speak Takemizu very well, which is my world’s equivalent of Japanese. His step mother taught both him and his brother how to speak it when they kept asking her what she was saying on their trip to Takemizu when they were children.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
He has been known to blurt out the odd phrase in Takemizu, yes.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He is actually a very good and inspiring impromptu speaker, but as a young man, doesn’t realise it.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
When he was younger, and prone to hesitation, he could come across as inarticulate. Once he starts to gain confidence, it becomes obvious that he is, in fact, an eloquent speaker.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
More intelligent than he gives himself credit for. He especially has very good business acumen, and this will become apparent once he takes over the family businesses and gets himself sorted.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He thinks on his feet, but also has good ideas when he can think about a problem.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
All four. At various parts of his life, and in various situations, he shows/will show/has shown that he is logical, practical, idealistic and intuitive.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
Educated at the Board school in the county town until he was 18. He then attended New Simbridge collage at Simbrige university, where he gained a BA(hons) (a 1st) in English Literature before going on to gain a MA, also in English Literature.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Like I say, he has very good business acumen

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
He’s pretty extroverted, and loves, and craves the company of others.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Pretty even tempered on the whole if I think about it. I mean, he has he problems with confidence that can look like he’s having mood swings and there are times when he’s prone to melancholy, but there is always a reason for it. The only thing with that melancholy is that he doesn’t always come out of it as quickly as others think he should.

He can be both laid back and driven, depending on where he is on his character arc, and the situation.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He’s very enthusiastic about meeting new people and being in company. He’s also fairly relaxed when meeting new people, mainly because he likes it.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
As a younger man, react, as he gets older, act.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
As a youngster, flight, when he’s older, fight. Unless his brother’s safety is involved, then it is ALWAYS fight.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He has a quick wit that is based on word play and situational humour, with an edge of sarcasm to it. He often makes jokes before he’s realised it, such as when he joked to Sophia about her and Lauren joining him to dine in nought but their chemises and corsets. He was mortified on his walk back to the LS, when he realised what he’d said.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
He has anxiety issues, which will never really leave him.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His mother’s neglect has shaped a large part of his personality. The birth of his brother. His parents’ divorce. His father’s remarriage. Discovering how good he is at football and leading a team. His burgeoning relationship with Sophia. Lots of stuff happening in the future of the story that I can’t talk about.

14. What does he fear?
Being on his own.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
I can’t really talk about this yet.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He thinks he’ll make a poor heir, and that his brother is much more suited to the job.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Very, VERY poor with his mother. She completely neglected him when he was a child, and he doesn’t like her. Which makes him feel bad, because she’s his mother and he should care for her.
Very good with his father. He idolises him and thinks he is a fine man.
Also very good with his step mother. She cares for him as if he were her own son, and vice versa. It makes him sad that he doesn’t have that sort of relationship with the woman who gave birth to him.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
One full brother, Stuart whom he idolises. They are very, very close and Bertie will do anything for him, if he can ever get over his own selfishness that is.
Also a half sister, Emina whom he dotes on. He’s not quite as understanding towards her and her little ticks as Stuart is, but he is very, very proud of her and loves her fiercely.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
He’s close to most of his first cousins, and Andrew and Peter who are second cousins I believe. I wouldn’t say that he can’t stand Sarah Jane, but he’s not very close to her at all, and finds her trying. He’s also not that close to Mickey and Zane, but that’s more to do with the age difference than anything else.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Ezra, who technically becomes part of the family when he marries Bethany.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
His best friend is Stuart.

6. Does he have other close friends?
He’s become close to several members of the university football team.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He makes friends very easily; he’s a personable person.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Family.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Currently engaged in both game and story, he’ll be marrying Sophia who is the love of his life.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No.  And the idea would never even cross his mind.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
There was a girl in Simford he used to see a lot that he liked. His latest is Sophia.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He’s never thought about it. He’s attracted to Sophia because he is, and that’s the end of it.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
Not at the moment, but he will do.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Umm, he wouldn’t think of him as an enemy, but his first cousin, once removed John is one.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
100% straight.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Obviously this hasn’t come up in game or story that much, but sex is going to be very, very important to him and his wife. We’ve seen how drawn to each other they are, and a little about how this is a powerful physical attraction too. Their passion for each other is immense. They need each other, and they need to be as physically close as possible.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
His turn on is Sophia. Everything about her drives him crazy and fills him with desire. Her looks, her energy, her personality. Everything.

I don’t know whether it’s a weird bedroom habit or not, but he and Sophia love to argue and then make up and then argue while making up. That, combined with their natural passion for each other means that they both enjoy rough, passionate sex.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
He’s an Aries, and looking at the characteristics of the sign, then yes he does fit it quite well. He’s competitive (well, he is a sportsman), impulsive and rash, and courageous.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Like all my characters who are born in Simland, he’s a member of the equivalent of the CofE and attends church regularly.  (I should perhaps say that it's the equivalent in the way that it's the state religion and it praises the Lord Wright and the Creator, rather than God.  Because they are the beings that are responsible for calling the world my characters live in, into being.)  It’s not needed to come up in my story yet and so hasn’t.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He is a very ethical person, but doesn’t think about it too much. It’s just how he is.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He’s very tolerant of others, and quite curious.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
I don’t think he’s prejudiced really.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
His family’s well off and has been for a few years now, ever since his father was a young man.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He is middle class, but upper middle class now. His family was more towards the middle of the class when he was a young child.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He’s lived in his family home, a large manor house in the village of Regalton, one of the halls of residence at university, and the Legacy Society. He’ll be moving back to the family home after university, where he’ll share it with his father, step mother and little sister as well as his wife. The family home is very special to the family, since it’s built on a parcel of land bought by his great, great grandfather when he moved to Regalton from Simdon. He’s recently overseen a complete overhaul of the building with his father and he hopes it will be a happy family home for many years to come.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
I don’t really know. He’s not really a materialistic person. I suppose he would spend his money on tickets to the theatre and concerts, something he and Sophia can enjoy together. And then discuss and disagree on.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
In game, he’s going to go into the Athletic career, and he’ll love it. In story, he’s going to take over the running of the businesses, and again, he’ll enjoy it.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He’s a keen sportsman and so spends a lot of his free time playing some sport or another, preferably football.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He eats regular meals, mainly because meals have been offered at regular times in every house he’s lived in, apart from the LS. He has to keep his energy up, and so tends to eat well, and fairly healthily given the time he lives in.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color? Russets and browns.

3. Time of day? Morning
4. Season? Summer
5. Book? He doesn’t have a favourite.
6. Music? Any string arrangement.
7. Place? Open fields.

This was interesting, and Bertie is a very sympaethic guy. *pets him* I'm also impressed, again, on the amount of details you know about your characters.

[identity profile] dicreasy.livejournal.com 2012-06-04 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. He is, he has his faults (and always will), but he's a nice guy overall.

It's amazing ho much useless info I know about my characters, but this is a very handy, and really fun meme to do. It gets you thinking about things you might not have already thought about.

Awww, Bertie, we love you! Thank you, Di, for sharing this!

:D I'm glad people like him.

You're welcome, this was fun. :D

I am intrigued by this scar on his shoulder and your lack of explanation... I love all the little details that you have put into each of your characters! There is so much extra that you know about them that we don't always get to see!

Can I put in a request for one on Emmi?

[identity profile] dicreasy.livejournal.com 2012-06-04 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, didn't I mention how he got that one? Oops. *whistles innocently*

Thank you, and it's slightly ridiculous how much extra I know about my characters, but this is a very handy and fun thing to do, and it means I can share some of that trivia with you all.

Of course! I'd like to do one for each of my main characters, if only for my own reference, so I'll put Emmi at the top of the pile. :D

I'm very amazed and delighted at all the effort you've put into characterizing your characters. And I love the way you characterize Bertie.

By the way, is there one for Marielle? I'm curious about what you have in mind for her.

[identity profile] dicreasy.livejournal.com 2012-06-04 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. A lot of it is intuitive, and has evolved over how long I've been thinking about them. It's also fun to think about.

I've not done for Marielle yet, but I do want to do one for each of my main characters, so I'm sure I can fit it in. :D

[identity profile] regacylady.livejournal.com 2012-06-05 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, Bertie. What surprised me most is that I didn't learn a whoooole lot more about him, mainly because I think everything you've said here comes through brilliantly in your chapters. You've done an amazing job with him!

[identity profile] dicreasy.livejournal.com 2012-06-06 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's good then. :D I admit that I may have avoided talking about some future things, but I'm happy I've managed to get his character across. Thanks!
