Unpleasant doings.
Something unpleasant squished underfoot and the man grimaced as he looked down at it. "What am I doing here?" he murmured as he tried to scrape the worst of the mess off the sole of his shoe. It wasn't the first time he had questioned the wisdom of dashing off through the dark alleys that snaked through this part of Simdon, but he had thought he had seen him and the rage had descended and he had headed off before rational thought had had a chance to reassert itself.
There was a noise to the left of him, and he whirled round. Squinting in the gloom revealed nothing, and making up his mind that this was possibly the stupidest endeavour he had ever embarked upon, he started working his way back the way he had come. He thought he must be nearing the main road by now, when he heard someone cough behind him. His heart hammering, he turned round to see the shadowy figure of a man standing in a gap between two buildings.
“Who is there?” he called, trying to sound less fearful than he was.
The man stepped out of the shadow, and into the dirty light that was filtered through the window of one of the adjacent buildings. The light wasn’t bright, but it was just enough for the first man to see the crazy glint in the other’s green eyes.
The second man’s mouth spilt into a strange, brittle grin. “Hello Bertie.”
