So, I’ve finished playing my rotation, and rather than getting straight on and making my backups, I decided to get everyone’s pictures up to date for the Who’s Who and family tree, so head on over to them to see everyone who has become an adult recently and also a few sims you’ve not met yet. I spent an enjoyable few hours making sims of extended family members for both Sophia and Lauren and Sir Horace, and as is often the case, seeing the sims helped me to cement some of the aspects of their characters in my mind. Have a drabble that came to me this morning concerning one of them.

Title:  Gweneth
Rating: U.
Spoiler rating: 2/10.
Summary: Sarah Jane attends a formal ball with Sir Horace.
Notes: The incident with the bishop is entirely fictional, and I've taken a liberty by making it seem that Disraeli and Gladstone swapped in and out of power more than they actually did.
Word Count: 993.

Sarah Jane looked nervously around the sumptuous ballroom. This was her first proper function as a betrothed woman, and it had to be the annual Parliamentary Christmas ball didn’t it? She watched as her mother sailed through the throng, greeting important politicians and wives as old friends, which, in a way, she supposed they were. Horace patted her hand and she looked up into his sparkling grey eyes. That was one big consolation, she was on the arm of her fiancé, and he looked especially handsome that night in his tail suit. He steered her round the room, whispering in her ear as he did so “that there is Lord Farthingale who made such a hash of that situation with the poor dead ladybird found in the Bishop of Norchester’s chamber,” it took Sarah Jane a moment to realise he was not talking about a ladybird of the insect kind. “There we see Forster talking with a very bored looking Margate. Probably banging on again about education reform. The two men looking at each other with strained expressions are Disraeli and Gladstone. A few years back, they were swapping the Premiership between each other so much, it was like trying to keep up with a game of lawn tennis.  Most dizzying.” He would have continued but across the room, someone called his name. He looked in the direction of the speaker and his face relaxed into a smile as he let go of Sarah Jane’s arm. Just in time it seemed, because a woman in a black dress rushed up to them, and gripped his arms. “Horace, there you are! I knew you would skulking somewhere around here!” She punctuated her words by kissing him on both his cheeks. “I would hardly say I have been skulking Gwen, not when I have been walking round the floor in plain sight!” Sir Horace laughed, a deep throaty chuckle, and Sarah Jane felt an irrational surge of jealousy that this woman could make him laugh so. She looked carefully at the older woman, taking stock of her features. Her hair, although streaked heavily with grey, was of a beautiful russet colour, the red tones clearly visible in the light from the lamps. Her eyes were dark grey and full of mischief, and although there were deep lines around her eyes and mouth, it was clear they were the marks of good humour, rather than dissatisfaction. Her skin was like porcelain, with a light smatter of freckles across the bridge of her nose that time hadn’t faded. In short, she was a woman, who in her youth must have been stunningly beautiful, and now firmly into her middle years, was still capable of turning heads. Sarah Jane’s jealousy increased.

The woman in black waved a dismissive hand in response to Sir Horace’s remark. “What are particulars really worth when you come down to it?”

“A great deal,” replied Sir Horace with another chuckle. “You make it sound as if I have been up to some nefarious scheme in the shadows, rather than taking the floor with a beautiful young lady on my arm.” Sarah Jane felt a flush of pleasure at that description. With each and every familiar and intimate gesture he had shared with the older woman, she had started to believe that he had forgotten her.

The other woman glanced quickly at Sarah Jane before turning her gaze back to Sir Horace. “A beautiful young lady you have neglected to introduce me to,” she inclined her head towards Sarah Jane as she spoke and raised her eyebrows. “You have hardly given me a chance Gwen,” admonished Sir Horace. The other woman rolled her eyes playfully at him before shaking her head in mock exasperation at Sarah Jane, who almost quirked a conspiratorial smile in response before she remembered herself. “Gwen, may I introduce you to Miss Sarah Jane Smith, my betrothed. Sarah Jane, this is Lady Gweneth Farington, my sister.”

Sister. At that word all of Sarah Jane’s jealousy melted and she felt a little silly. Of course they were siblings; she had enough of her own to recognise the playful banter and gentle teasing that occurred between brother and sister, and now she looked more carefully, she could clearly see that the inquisitive eyes that met hers were the exact same shade of grey as Horace’s, and the way in one side of her mouth hitched up higher when she smiled was identical to Horace’s way of smiling. She had been foolish not to notice before.

“So delighted to make your acquaintance at long last Miss Smith,” said Lady Farington as she held out her hand. Sarah Jane took it. “And yours Lady Farington. Horace had quite neglected to inform me he had a sister.” She shot her fiancé a look as she said this. Sir Horace had the grace to look ashamed.

Lady Farington sent a withering look his way too. “Somehow I am not entirely surprised,” she said. “Mother and I always wondered if Horace was paying attention when she was endeavouring to teach him good manners. And by the way my dear, you must call me Gwen if we are to be sisters.” At this, she neatly pushed her way between Sarah Jane and Sir Horace and took Sarah Jane’s arm. As she did so, Sarah Jane realised with a start that her dress was not black, but rather the darkest green. Had she been correct in nothing with her first impressions of this woman? “I would be delighted to do so,” she managed. “But you must call me Sarah Jane.”

“Then it is settled. Now tell me about yourself Sarah Jane. I know your parents of course and I am endeavouring to persuade Reggie, my husband, to purchase one of your brother’s beautiful paintings of Simdon, but you, I nothing about.”

Sarah Jane found herself telling her future sister-in-law all about herself as she was steered around the room.

I got a little suspicious about something when he called her Gwen. I didn't think Sister, until he mentioned it, but this is HORACE, there had to be some reason he would be so drastically informal to the woman in a public place and in front of his fiance. :)

I loved her.

:D I'm so pleased with the response to this.

That's it exactly. She has to be someone very close to Sir Horace for him to act like this, but I also wanted everyone to be figuring it out with Sarah Jane.

Love it! :D Gwen sounds like quite a character. I was right there with Sarah Jane on the jealousy and was even relieved to find out it's Horace's sister. XD I can't wait to see Sarah Jane's story play out.

She is. She's the sort of woman, whose children roll their eyes at her antics. She's great. :D

I'm so glad people were with Sarah Jane until the reveal. I wanted everyone to see the scene from her point of view and be with her with their feelings.

Like everyone else, I got mighty suspicious when Horace greeted Gwen so informally. I am SO looking forward to how Sarah Jane's story plays out. :)

Which is good, since it's what I wanted when I wrote this. :D

Awww, I'm glad it's just his sister and not something else! And Gwen seems quite lovely.

Yep, Gwen's his sister. I think I cut the mention of her out of the last chapter, so it was a surprise. :D

Gwen's a lot of fun.

You know, I like Sarah Jane when she's not interacting with Bethany. I'm looking forward to seeing her come into her own, and I think you can see glimpses of it here.

Sarah Jane is defintely much nicer to write when she's not around her sister, at least at the moment. A lot of her problems and insecurities have their root in Bethany, which is a shame. As she matures, things will change in this regard.

I like Gwen. she comes across as warmth and energy personified. Someone whom causes great jealousy when seen as a threat and yet once the threat is removed you can't help but fall in love with her. I felt all of Sarah Jane's emotions like they were my own.

Good! She'll only ever be a minor background character, but she's a fun one to have running around my head.

Thank you, that's great to hear, since I really did want to have the reader there with Sarah Jane through this. :D

I could guess that there was something to this and SJ was just being silly, but I couldn't guess why. I figured Gwen was too young to be Horace's mother, but I didn't get further than that. Anyway, she's lovely. :) And I'm with Lea, I think I do kind of like Sarah Jane (more) when she's not interacting with Bethany. *nods*

:D Yep things were definiely not as Sarah Jane feared here. Gwen is a lot of fun, and I'm glad people like such a minor character. :D

Sarah Jane is a nicer person when she's not around her sister, that's for sure.
