Ok, so this is a late drabble for
sim_spiration . It's actually part of a future scene, but I didn't feel up to writing up my ideas when the prompt went up. It needs a bit of polishing, but enjoy.
School Dance.
As the last notes of the band died away, Celestia disengaged herself from her dancing partner, and made a polite excuse, before crossing the floor and flopping (as much as her corset would allow) onto one of the straight-backed chairs arranged around the dance floor.
Her feet, she decided wiggling her toes inside her satin dance shoes, were killing her.
Sighing, she opened her dance card and scanned it. Even for an event such as this, it was unusually full. Thus far she had danced, not only with a succession of students from the university, but also with both her brothers, David, Dean, Ernie (a second cousin) and Bertie. No wonder her feet hurt.
She continued to read her card. This was a rare free dance, but next she would be partnered by Stuart. She glanced across the room, where Stuart and Elle were only now leaving the floor. Correction. She would be partnered by her cousin if she could prise him away from her friend. then she was dancing with Dean...hang on. Hadn't she already danced with him? And that wasn't her handwriting. She shook her head ruefully. How had the cheeky sod managed to doctor her dance card, when it had been on her person all evening?
After that, she was dancing with his brother. A genuine smile settled on her lips. They might have had a small blip when they were teenagers, but she counted Derri as one of her closest friends and looked forward to spending time with him.
Someone sat down on the chair next to her. "Hello Celly."
Her smile grew broader as she turned to face him. "Speak of the devil and he doth appear."
"You think I am the devil?" Asked Derri, mock hurt in his voice.
She giggled and nudged him with her elbow. "You know I cannot possibly answer that. I was looking to see when we would be dancing together."
"Ah. We have a few more to wait yet. You are much in demand Miss Harrison." He said.
Celly grimaced. "I know. They will not leave me alone. I have had so many men ask me to dance tonight, it is faintly ridiculous."
'And you have no idea why.' Thought Derri. 'You really don't realise how beautiful you are, or the effect your dark eyes and pretty smile have on the male population of New Simbridge, or how those who are not enamoured with your feisty nature, want to try to break you of it. Of course, if anyone does try to do that, I'll make sure they never do anything else ever again.'
"Derri, what is wrong?" Asked Celly, shaking him out of his reverie.
"Nothing, why?"
"You were frowning." She pointed out.
"Sorry."
"As long as it is not the company you are in. Oh no." Her face fell as she finished her sentence.
"What is it?" Asked Derri concerned.
"Mr Kimbrill is heading this way. He is repulsive, and he keeps asking me to dance."
Before Derri could respond, the repellent Mr Kimbrill was standing before them. "Miss Harrison." he said nodding curtly at her and ignoring Derri completely.
"Mr Kimbrill."
"Can I have this dance?"
Celly opened her mouth to reluctantly agree, since she had no more excuses, but Derri got there first. "Oh, I am sorry Mr Kimbrill, but Miss Harrison has already promised me this dance." He looked over at the band, who were picking up their instruments and turning their sheet music to the correct page. "I think the band is about to start playing again." HE stood up and held out his hand to Celly. "Shall we?"
Celestia smiled and placed her hand in his. "Yes. Do excuse us Mr Kimbrill."
As Derri led her away from a dumbfounded Mr Kimbrill, she turned her head slightly towards him. "Thank you." She said quietly.
"You're welcome. This gets you away from the odious Mr Kimbrill, and we get to dance sooner. I didn't see a downside to this plan."
"Me either." She replied.
