Yet another drabble which is far too long for the comments at
sim_spiration . I'm making a habit out of this. I'm also making habit out of writing mushy stuff, but never mind. :D
“Some say love it only comes once in a lifetime / Well, once is enough for me” ("Up Against the Wall" – The Whitlams)
"Yes, I am coming!" shouted Celestia as she tripped across the tiled hallway of the Victorian Privileged Ladies Society. She opened the door and found herself confronted by a large bouquet of cream, white and yellow flowers.
"Oh how beautiful, but I doubt they are for me." She said with a grin.
Stuart returned her smile. "No, I am afraid not. No matter how much I love you cousin Celestia, these are for someone else."
"Pity. I would never say no to some nice flowers," said Celly moving aside from the door. " Come on in, and I will go and fetch Ellie for you. I think she is in the study."
"Thank you." Stuart did as she bade, putting the flowers on top of the dresser and the case that was in his other hand on the floor, before turning to the mirror and straightening his tie. Celly suppressed a smile at his behaviour as she opened the study door leading off of the hall.
She had hardly finished saying who was waiting in the hall, before Elle Fitzhugh was out of her chair, heading to the hall. Celly and Azula exchanged amused glances before following her.
"Mr Legacy, how nice to see you today," said Ellie smiling at him.
"And you Miss Ellie. I bought you some flowers." Stuart held them out to her.
"For me?" Oh they are beautiful," she replied taking them. "Thank you."
"I am glad you like them." Stuart's smile broadened even more at the enthusiasm Ellie was showing for his gift. "I also wondered, it is a fine day outside, and I had thought to picnic down by the river. Would you care to join me? Your sister is also invited of course." Stuart nodded at Azula.
"I'd love to Mr Legacy." Elle was positively beaming by now. "You'll come too Zuzu, won't you?" she asked, knowing full well that Stuart would insist that they not go out alone.
"Oh. I'd love to Ellie, but I have a deportment lesson with Mrs Kalson, and she's made it clear it's compulsory."
Azula looked pained as she spoke, and felt worse as Ellie's face fell.
"I can accompany you," said Celly suddenly. She too knew that Stuart wouldn't go out with Ellie without a chaperone, no matter how much he wanted to spend time with her.
"It is settled then," said Stuart smiling.
"Yes, let me go and get my hat and parasol," said Celly, moving to go upstairs.
"Thank you," whispered Azula as she walked past.
"You are welcome."
It was, Celestia decided, a very nice picnic overall. True, thinly cut cucumber sandwiches would have been more palatable than the doorstep sandwiches Stuart had brought along, and there was definitely far too much chutney in the sandwich she had partaken of, but he had thought to bring napkins, and the game pie was rather excellent. The fresh strawberries and chilled white wine had been a nice touch too, but then again, Ellie and Stuart could have been eating ashes for all they noticed of what they were consuming. In fact, they didn't notice much of what was going on around them that afternoon. They didn't notice when she excused herself after spotting Derri walking past, and they certainly didn't notice when she didn't come back. They were far too caught up in enjoying each other's company.
They had been by the river for a couple of hours, and the remainder of the wine was quite warm, when Stuart lifted Ellie's hand to his lips and kissed it. "Papa and Kasan have invited Bertie, Miss Sartor and myself to dinner early next week. It would mean a lot to me, if you were to accept my invitation to join us."
Ellie's smile faltered for a moment. He wanted her to have dinner with his family. What if they didn't like her? That would be awful. But at least the fact he was inviting her was a sign that he liked her, maybe even felt more than like towards her, and that was very good. Her smile broadened again. "I'd like that."
"Good! You have met Papa and Kasan before have you not?"
"I think I've seen them briefly at the Boutique, but I haven't met them properly."
"You will like them. Papa is an amazing man, and Kasan is a lovely, gentle woman. And they will love you."
Ellie nodded absent mindedly. "There's something I've been meaning to ask you."
"What is that?" Stuart moved closer to her.
"Kasan, that is a Takemizu word isn't it?"
"It is," agreed Stuart. "Kasan is from Takemizu Village."
"You do not look Takemizuan."
"Oh." Stuart laughed. "Kasan is my step mother, not my birth mother."
"Oh. Oh! I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"I didn't realise. Is your mother," Ellie paused, chewing on her lip, "dead?"
"No. At least, I do not think she is. I have not heard anything of her since I was a child, so she might be. Although I somehow think that Father would make sure we were informed if anything happened to her. No, instead my father created a sensation by divorcing her."
"I'm sorry."
Stuart looked at her, his brow creased. "Why? I was an infant when it happened, I do not even remember her. All I know is that Papa and Kasan are very happy, and I would not change that for the world."
Ellie was silent for a moment, thinking. She moved her hand, so that her fingers were touching his. "It's a comforting thought really."
"What, my parents' divorce?" teased Stuart.
Ellie threw him a look. "No, silly." She looked down at the blanket they were sitting on, and started to pick at it. "Some of the girls in one of my classes were discussing marriage the other day. They were talking about how they trusted their parents to find the best match for them, when I. one of them, spoke up about how they wanted to marry someone she loved. One of the other girls said that love only comes along once in a lifetime, and hardly ever with the best possible match for one. It's comforting to know that if someone does mess up and marry the wrong person, they might get a second chance."
Stuart nodded slowly as he took in the curve of her jaw, and the shadow of her lashes on her cheek. "Yes," he murmured, but silently he added 'once is enough for me.'
